Preparing for the Job

Finding the Jobs

Finding a job can be the biggest challenge for individuals. Here are some useful tips that will help you find a career in the tourism industry!

    Where to Look for Jobs

  • HI Tourism Careers utilizes the Hirenet Hawai`i search engine for its jobs. You can access Hirenet's job postings HERE
  • Search for jobs on company websites. These jobs are not always on monster.com or other large job search engines.
  • Joining networking websites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter will allow you to connect with friends and colleagues that may have leads for jobs.

Creating your Resume and Cover Letter

One of the challenges of applying for a job is creating or updating your resume and cover letter. While writing a resume and cover letter may seem daunting, here are some useful tips:

    Resume Tips

  • Find a resume style that fits your education and work experience.
  • If you have little job experience, keep your resume to one page.
  • If you have a lot of job experience, use a resume format that focuses on job skills.
    • Here is an example of a resume that focuses on relevant job skills.
  • User "Power" verbs. For example, instead of stating you simply "handled" accounts, use, "managed."
  • Employers prefer resumes that are written for them. Avoid using resume templates.
  • Make sure your voicemail has a professional voice message.
  • Make sure you include a professional email address. For example, jyamashita2008@hotmail.com is more professional than 808skatecrew@yahoo.com.
  • Avoid describing your job skills in general terms such as "team player" or "people person."
  • Use bullet points as they are easier to read.
  • Use consistent formatting in your resume.
  • Don't use pronouns (For example, I, me, and my).
  • Most importantly, proofread your resume before sending it to the employer.

    Cover Letters

  • Cover letters are opportunities to elaborate on your resume.
  • Use concise language and keep it short. A cover letter should not exceed one page or have more than 3 or 4 paragraphs.
  • Always keep a copy of your cover letter for your own records.

Other Tips When Writing Resumes and Cover Letters

  • When you write a resume or cover letter, address it to the person who is in charge of hiring.
  • Print your resume and cover letter on resume paper. Although it costs more money, it makes your application look more professional.

The Interview

The interview process is the last step before being hired by a company. During the interview, there are several things that you can do to make the best impression with a potential recruiter. Check out the link above to watch KGMB's "Reinventing Yourself" segment on preparing for the interview.
