Sustainability Workshop for
Hawai'i Business Leaders
The State Workforce Development Council, under the State Energy Sector Partnership (SESP) and job training grant, will be conducting workshops for business leaders in Hawai'i interested in incorporating principles of sustainability into their organizations. Workshops will be conducted on Kaua'i, Maui, the Big Island, and O'ahu.
This highly interactive, full day workshop will include four sessions:
- Sustainability 101 for business. Seven core concepts of sustainability with case studies of how local buisinesses are using these strategies to thrive.
- Communications for sustainability. Marketing, sales, and customer loyalty strategies that align your internal and external corporate communications with your sustainability efforts.
- Opportunities in sustainability. Innovative growth strategies for your business including no-cost and low-cost measures to improve resource use while cutting costs.
- Engaging the green workforce. Getting the most from your sustainability programs through employee engagement and green team development.
About the presenters:
Scott Cooney, M.S., M.B.A.
Scott Cooney is the Principal Advisor at the GBO Group, a sustainability strategy consulting firm based in Honolulu. He is also a green business author, educator and serial eco-entrepreneur who has started, grown and sold several green businesses. Scott teaches sustainability at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the MBA Program at the Shidler College of Business. Scott has been project manager or client lead in sustainability consulting work for Eastman Chemical, Wal-Mart, Johnson & Johnson, Duke Energy, NBC Universal, Procter & Gamble, and several others. McGraw-Hill published Scott's first book, Build a Green Small Business, and most recently Scott has developed GBO Hawai'i, an educational board game about greening Hawai'i's economy, and is currently developing iPad and Android Applications to bring the game online. Laura is an accredited sustainable tourism consultant and auditor, and specializes in global sustainable tourism certification. Laura's expertise in sustainable tourism and certification was solidified by professional experience and extensive research conducted in Southeast Asia, Central America, South America, and the Hawaiian Islands. Laura has worked with sustainable tourism initiatives internationally, including Chile's national ecotourism initiative, Sendero de Chile, and Sustainable Travel International's Eco-Certification Guidance Manuals. Laura has an MS in Travel Industry Management (TIM) from UH Manoa, and a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
