Description

The Certificate in Community Interpreting will provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to interpret in a variety of settings: from social service agencies to hospitals and courtrooms.


Candidates for the Certificate in Community Interpreting are required to take four courses (12 credit hours-equivalent) and may select between two specializations: medical or legal. The Certificate is composed of three core courses (9 credit-equivalent), one specialization course (medical or legal) (3 credit-equivalent), and an optional one elective course (3 credit-equivalent). In the Professional Orientation and Internship, students will spend time practicing skills in an unpaid internship in the field of their choice.


Core courses include: Introduction to Interpreting (40 hours, Noncredit), Community Interpreting (40 hours, Noncredit), and Professional Orientation and Internship (40 hours, Noncredit).


Specialization courses (choose one) include: Medical Interpreting (40 hours, Noncredit) and Court Interpreting I (40 hours, Noncredit). 


Optional courses, which strengthen the interpreter's abilities, include: Court Interpreting II (40 hours, Noncredit) and Simultaneous Interpretation (40 hours, Noncredit).


Admission is open to any language speaker. Students will be required to take a screening test composed of an interview. Prospective students should contact program advisors at cits@hawaii.edu.


Upon successful completion of all courses, students will be allowed to sit for the Certificate in Community Interpreting exam in their specialization and language pair. The Certificate exam will require a separate fee.

Description of School

Outreach College Noncredit Programs extend the mission of University of Hawai'i at Manoa to its graduates, other professionals, and community members throughout the Hawai'i Pacific region. The Outreach College was formed when the former College of Continuing Education and Community Service and the Office of Summer Sessions were merged in 1998. Its programs have been offered for nearly a century.
